LJL FVL-1

"Everything starts with a dot."

My understanding of dots and lines started on the very first day of the FVL sessions where we were introduced to what dots and lines were and how they perform as a fundamental element in visual language. This was then followed by the creation of a line bank.

This bank and different kinds of dots were then used to create compositions consisting of various themes like confusion, rhythm, power, rain, clouds etc.

(Rhythm, power, power, clouds, rain. confusion)

Through these sessions I also learnt that dots can be of any shape. These different kinds of dots were used to make variety of shapes and lines.

A similar practice was done using lines as well.

These exercises definitely helped me broaden my perspective regarding dots and lines. I realise how an humble dot or line can be manipulated to visually communicate anything.

Thematic representations:

The above composition was my attempt to convey the theme of confusion with the use of square dots. I managed to convey this theme by avoiding any form of patterns and by excess overlapping. However, I feel that I should have also tried capturing this theme with lesser number of square dots.

The above images are my attempt to represent the theme power using square dots. I feel I was unable to fully capture the theme with the placement of my dots.

Daily Drawing Document:

The above images are some of my successful drawings. I consider them as the better ones because I could capture the character of the shoes with less detail, time and effort.

These images are my less successful ones. I feel like I was unable to get the shape of the shoe right. In some of the them I had to add a lot of details as well.

STRUGGLES FACED:

  • I found it hard to stay motivated everyday.

  • Certain shoes like boots were sometimes a struggle to draw.

  • It was very hard to avoid adding details to the sketches.

ACHIVEMENTS:

  • I was able to increase my efficiency, i.e. the time consumed and effort taken reduced in sketching by week two.

  • I started feeling more comfortable in sketching roughly.

CONCLUSION:

MUDDIEST POINTS:

  • Can a dot have an outline? I started getting confused about the difference between dots with shapes.

  • I am also not really sure on how to represent the theme power using square dots.

CLEAREST POINTS:

  • I am clear with how dots and lines can be used to visually communicate any theme or message.

  • I understand how a line bank can be created and used effectively while creating compositions

  • I am also clear with how to represent shapes (2-d, 3-d) with various kinds of dots.

  • How to create textures with ink is also understood.

My experience in FVL has taught me how shapes can also be created with very few dots.

I also learnt that there are millions of possibilities that could be created by simply altering the positions, colour, size and kind of dots.

On the sixth day I also learnt how to create unique textures with by using different material like paper, brushes foil etc.

I hope to utilise these learnings while creating new compositions in the future. I understood that one can attain variety of results simply by altering the size, placement kind etc. This understanding can be useful when there is a need to create variety.

These sessions have certainly helped me in creating a new, deeper understanding of dots. But I feel there is more that can be explored in lines. I am now curious to explore lines further and also play with more mediums other than ink, pencil and charcoal.

Since all these explorations were achromatic, I would now like to also explore and understand the same in colour as well.
