ACTIVITY 7 : Thinking tools

INTRODUCTION:

Attribute: Refers to the characteristics feature of something.

During this session of think lab we were introduced to various tools that would help in creative thinking and generating ideas.

WARM-UP ACTIVITY:

We were first introduced to a tool known as 'SLICE AND DICE' which basically involves picking an object and dissecting it into different part and placing them in different categories. We did this activity by creating this below shown table.

SLICE

DICE

Discriptional attributes

Functional attributes

Emotional attributes

Process attributes

Social attributes

This method was made more clear with a example of a pencil.

Next, we moved onto another tool known as 'S.C.A.M.P.E.R.' which basically stands for , S= Substitute, C= Combine, A= Adapt, M= Modify/ Magnify, P= Put to another use, E= Eliminate and R= Reverse/ Rearrange. We were shown several examples where this tool was used to produce new products

MAIN ACTIVITY:

Brief: In the main activity we were asked to first choose a object from two given categories; kitchen items or stationary. We then had to work as a group and use the above mentioned technique known as Slice and Dice on that object.

We were also asked to individually use the S.C.A.M.P.E.R. technique on any other object that falls in the category we earlier chose.

Our group chose the category stationary and the object paintbrush for our Slice and Dice.

For the individual work, the object I chose was a pencil holder.

FINAL REFLECTION:

The techniques introduced during this session can definitely be useful in the future for generating ideas.

  • While using the Slice and Dice technique, our group struggled in trying to expand the social attributes of a paint brush.

  • While using the S.C.A.M.P.E.R. technique, I was confused as to why the eliminate technique did not involve eliminating parts of the selected object and instead only involved reducing the size of the object etc.

LEARNING MANTRA:

You cannot always rely on a eureka moment in order to come up with new solutions and connections.

HOME TASK:

CROSS BREEDING:

(Spoon x fork)
